Your Future Children, Anime and You

Recently, Dantzel and I have started watching some anime that we actually enjoy. Dantzel has fallen in love with Ouran High School Host Club, whereas I will laud the many virtues of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Often, Dantzel and I will sit together by ourselves in our studio apartment, singing praises to the anime gods and wondering when Troy or Kim and Jill will buy the next installment.

The problem is, we're married. And generally speaking, married people (especially Mormon ones) make babies sometime in the future. And the problem with this is that babies and little children probably shouldn't be watching Ouran High School Host Club or The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

This presents a conundrum. We love these shows, and we want to own them, but do we really want our children accidentally stumbling upon this?

Because, as everyone knows, after exposure to such things as Ouran High School Host Club or The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya at such an early age, they might end up like this:

And that would be sad.

As a communication studies student and media arts follower, I've decided that being a good parent isn't just about keeping "inappropriate" media away from children - it's about teaching them to make informed media decisions. There's something to be said for keeping material on-hand to introduce at appropriate times or if they show interest. As long as you're careful not to let your "you can't watch this" shelf become one (of likely many) source of brooding rebellious childhood angst.

ALSO HOST CLUB IS HILARIOUS SO IT MUST BE OK.

Haha.

Oh, certainly. I say this in jest, mostly. While I would object to my children watching Host Club at an early age, I also remember that I watched Ranma 1/2 when I was young and I turn out okay.

Relatively.

Personally, my problem is the opposite. It's not that our daughter wants to get into our forbidden anime stashes, it's that she'd rather watch inane Disney live action shows than any anime at all!
