I watched a movie in my Geographical Information Systems (GIS) class, and it was basically how GIS is going to save the world. It was intense. But the intro was rather silly - the background music consisted of a constant stream of random beeping and other "electronic" noises. It made me think - why does everyone think advanced computers are going to make all this random noise? In fact, I rarely ever hear my computer make noises unless I'm playing music or movies, or I did something wrong and my computer emmits one - and only one - chime. I wonder about the credibility of the movie. Surely people who know about GIS use computers. Surely they know that computers usually do not just make random noises. Why would they still put those sounds in?
It's rather annoying, and makes me worried. Will the next iBook try to communicate to us through some kind of Morse Code through different pitches and lengths of "bloops" and "bleeps"? I hear that the Macworld presentation kind of flopped this year. Maybe they should invest in this idea. I'm sure many consumers would buy a chatty computer that makes sounds consistant with the soundtrack of a really bad sci-fi movie, with the right kind of Steve Jobs spin. Then the elitists can get on my back because my miserly PC doesn't make sounds unless I tell it to.
