Sometimes, it does freeze over

When Caleb's girlfriend Jamie came back from Maine, apparently it was a time of rejoicing for my former roommate and Dantzel's brother, who had been seperated from her all summer. However, when I came back to Provo, I was not ready to hear the shocking news relayed to me by Ephraim, Caleb's younger brother.

Jamie plays Dungeons and Dragons and Caleb is going to play with her.

Caleb is quite possibly the antithesis of your standard Dungeons and Dragons player. He is very nationalistic, the only movies he likes are ones with less talking and more spectacular explosions, doesn't really want to eat any dish that doesn't have some kind of beef in it and enjoys football because it's one of the few times as the elder's quorum president that he's sanctioned to run into people and knock them onto the ground. Video games are a complete waste of time and he's never tried to play one before. Computers are something to be tolerated, not used. He does thirty handstand push-ups a day. He frames houses for a living and doesn't like to take crap from anyone.

Though he was home schooled, had he gone to high school, he easily could have been the jock that would throw the kids who read Lord of the Rings (before the movies came out) into a trash can or stuff them in a locker or steal all their clothes and run them up a flagpole while the poor kid was in the gym showers.

Before I paint an entirely negative picture of Caleb, he is a very nice kid. He's incredibly dedicated to his girlfriend (as one can see that he's so willing to step out of his comfort zone) and is a very spiritual person. He has been one of my favorite roommates and we've had many deep discussions about many a subject late into the night. He's a very smart person.

But to hear that he's playing Dungeons and Dragons was priceless.

So of course, I had to witness it for myself. Jamie's whole apartment apparently plays Dungeons and Dragons, and we had been personally invited to the group, so Dantzel and I will be spending some of our Fridays this next semester observing Caleb's reaction as he delves into what many calls "Satan's game."

Starting in two Saturdays, we will be bringing back reports from the darkened room, surrounded by four girls and a loyal boyfriend, one bare bulb swinging from the ceiling, illuminating our faces but not entirely banishing the shadows, rolling dice, eating junk food and drinking copious amounts of soda.

Actually, I've never played Dungeons and Dragons in a group where girls outnumber the guys. Maybe we'll just have celery sticks and herbal tea instead.

Either way, I'm thinking about playing a gnome barbarian. Just because the idea of a four foot tall person weilding a huge two-handed axe and flying into a bloodlust rage is hilarious.
