Small matters of business
I'm wishing to learn various languages useful for web design and maintenance. If people could tell me which languages are useful and the order I should learn them in, it would be helpful. James has already demogogued about how much he hates PHP; I already fear learning to use program in it, though such fears are most likely baseless.

OK, PHP is probably the easiest to learn :) "True computer programmers" may not like it, and there are valid reasons (like front-end separation, etc.), but if you just want a small-to-medium sized website, I'd suggest going with PHP.
Otherwise, there's Perl and Python/Ruby, but those are more complicated and harder to find tutorials for.
